PARENTS THINK THERE IS MORE TO BE DONE TO
IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF SCHOOLS.
This is the primary purpose of Good Reason Houston, to accelerate change in those districts that are willing to take bold and courageous action to improve schools now, not five years from now.
LEVELS OF PARENT SATISFACTION ACROSS DISTRICTS
|
ONLY ONE-THIRD OF PARENTS ARE "COMPLETELY SATISFIED" WITH THEIR CURRENT PUBLIC SCHOOL.Less than a third (32%) of Houston parents are "completely satisfied" with their child's current school, suggesting room for improvement. There is no district with more than 50% of parents who are satisfied at their child's current school.

MORE PARENTS DEFINE HIGH-QUALITY SCHOOLS AS PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE.For parents, the most important indicators of whether or not a school is high quality are the outcomes it achieves for their children. The majority of parents identify the top indicators of a quality school as those that prepare their children for the next grade level, help them progress to attend a four-year college, and teach them valuable life skills through extracurricular activities.

% WHO AGREE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IS MORE
IMPORTANT THAN SCHOOL GOVERNANCE |
PARENTS OVERWHELMINGLY PRIORITIZE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND STUDENT PROGRESS OVER SCHOOL GOVERNANCE.Most parents agree that academic achievement and progress of students are more important than how the school is governed. Parents were given information about both elected school board and independent non-profit governing boards and consistently believed that achievement mattered more than governance.

PARENTS BELIEVE THAT HIGH-QUALITY TEACHERS DEMONSTRATE
STRONG AND HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR STUDENTS.
When provided with a list of options, Houston parents think of high-quality teachers in terms of how well they interact and meet the needs of students. Encouraging students to reach their goals, consistent communication with parents about students, energizing students about learning, and creating strong academic plans based on student needs are top traits of high-quality teachers.
